SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEMS

This project was conceived during an early horticulture assignment but was done later on, to replace an old above ground swimming pool site. It was also designed in mind to provide an interesting focal point to the yard as well as bring in native birds, amphibians and reptiles to the area.

sustainable gardensThe bottom of the pond is rubber lined, with large boulders surrounding the water's edge and stream area, also providing step downs for the waterfall in entering the lower pond. A biological filter is fitted at the top of the higher pond, but the array of water plants and fish stocked in the water help in keeping pond quality clean, oxygenating the water, reducing mould growth and keeping mosquito larvae down.

A pergola was built, with all guttering and stormwater pipes being directed to the dry creek bed which in turn drains into the pond. Excess water from the pond drains into an underground water tank further down the property.
