South Morang

This landscaping project in a new estate in South Morang served a few design ideas. It had to be functional allowing outdoor entertaining, yet being a key feature as well. The owners went for a less common paving material in using asphalt for the surface.

1.jpg  The start of this job required the construction of a feature BBQ. This BBQ is to be constructed of besser block with sandstone rubble incorporated into the sides. A concrete base is installed to provide a firm footing for the weight of the BBQ.

2.jpg  The concrete blocks were carefully laid to the unit dimensions, and the sandstone was then laid on top of the base course as a feature to the 2 ends of the BBQ. Natural mortar colour was used to blend in with the natural rock colours.

3.jpg  The structure was built to height ready for BBQ installation, rendering, and benchtop forming.

4.jpg  A front view showing internal cavities left for doors, BBQ unit and benchtops

6.jpg  A dark hardwood merbau decking was installed adjoining the BBQ to provide a fully functional outdoor entertaining area. Small low voltage lighting is also installed at the edges of the decking

7.jpg  The BBQ and retaining wall was rendered to provide a rustic finish to the concrete blockwork, ready for painting of a chosen colour. The BBQ unit was fitted into the feature and hooked up to mains gas outlets.

8.jpg  Brick edging was installed around the entire backyard as a surround to the asphalt paving and to separate paving areas from garden beds.

Asphalt paving was laid across all prepared areas to provide a fantastic paving alternative to concrete or pavers, with long lasting qualities.

1.jpg After enjoying the lower area the owners decided to do the top section of the garden. We went back to excavate the area ready for more works

2.jpg A retaining wall was constructed which also served as a feature backdrop, with a non-formal rendered finish and sandstone rock covering the surface which runs out in similar theme to the BBQ. A lower crazy paved sandstone sitting area lies beneath the wall, with sandstone step stones linking the areas together

3.jpg A similar stone to the lower area is chosen to tie all areas together

5.jpg Red brick edging was laid around garden bed and turf edges, with buffalo laid as a drought tolerant alternative. Tuscan toppings infills the pavers to link the areas while providing a low maintenance option
