The design
brief at this Keilor residence was to construct a more
user-friendly and modern garden to the yard which previously had
been used a lot but not as much these days in the layout it existed
in. A swimming pool was in the yard but hardly got used, so it was
decided to utilise the pool as water storage as an underground
water tank.
What would
be a big problem for some, we took in our stride to come up with a
solution that would be user-friendly, safe and long
lasting.
After stripping the yard
of the old landscape, the new items could be started. The pond was
constructed with a pond concrete mix, with river pebbles pushed
into the surface to create the natural look.
The decking was
constructed over the top of the old swimming pool, after being
covered with a special sheeting. 80% of the downpipes from the
house was redirected to the pool, with an overflow connected to
stormwater and a pump added so the water can be used around the
garden or within the house.
The pond was completed by
adding more pebbles and surrounding with mudstone boulders. All of
the materials had to be moved in by hand as there was only narrow
access to the site.
The completed pond. Large
boulders act as step stones from the paving area to the
decking, although there is
further access on the other side
New lawn was laid to
replace the old, with random sized sandstone step stones creating
access to other areas and utilities within the yard
