Macleod 3
This Springthorpe house in macleod
resides on a sloping block. This poses a problem of cutting and
filling areas if a flat backyard is wanted to be utilised and make
use of more of the available land on the block. This house had a
large treated pine retaining wall constructed to provide a firm
wall for the fill material to be levelled out.
All steel posts were
galvanised and set into the ground in large deep holes in
a concrete footing.
All timbers are chocked, braced and fixed to support the weight
behind it, also to stop warping of the timbers over
time.
All timbers are edge planed to
provide a good finish and good fit between the layers of
sleepers.
Behind the wall, drainage pipes
are laid, matting to eliminate water seepage through the timbers,
and stone aggregate added up the height of the wall to direct water
runoff directly into the drainage pipe, and to keep waterlogged
soil weight off the wall, which is the main reason behind premature
aging of timber retaining walls.
