Retaining walls are a necessity in some
areas to retain soil on a sloping or split-level block. They don’t
just have to serve a purpose however, they can become a feature of
the garden too. There are a wide variety of styles around to suit
all landscaping styles.
Timber walls in hardwood or treated pine
have been around for years, and so has various form of rockwork
walls. These days you can build with concrete interlocking
blocks in various colours and designs, which has become very
popular. You can also build the wall in a flat-faced concrete or
brick block, and cover with random stone, slate, or
pebble.

Timber walls can also be done
with a dressed finish. Compare the top left (undressed) with the
bottom picture (dressed), which gives a cleaner looking finish to a
simple wall. It also hides any imperfections that timber can get
due to warping over time.

in a stain or paint to make it a cost effective
